Andrology Basics
Dude, so much can go wrong with your dick. And even though we lived in a male-centric society, Andrology wasn’t really studied or a specialty until the 1960s. Considering that there are texts on gynecology that originated in 1800 B.C., men definitely got the short end of the research straw.
The Dry Stuff
The word Andrology originates from the Greek. Andros means man; and logia is the word for study. Andrology is the health field that works with male health and more specifically the male reproductive system. While Urology can be considered a separate specialty, there are urological conditions and diseases that are exclusive to men and that are handled by Andrologists. It is the complement to gynecology, or the specialty that handles medical issues specific to the female reproductive system. Andrology only a distinct specialty since the late 1960s and the first journal on this issue was the German publication (big surprise there,) Andrologie, which is now named Andrologia. Andrologia started publishing in 1969 and is still being published today.
Male-specific medical conditions include Peyronie’s disease and erectile dysfunction, while male only surgical procedures cover, but are not limited to vasectomies and vasectomy reversals.
Andrology also treats other male genital and urinary conditions.
